Jakarta (ANTARA) – Regional Representative Council (DPD) Speaker Sultan B. Najamudin said the annual session of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) on August 14 serves as a moment to connect regional voices with the national agenda.
“This moment affirms that the face of Indonesia’s parliament consists of two forms of representation, namely the House of Representatives (DPR) as political representation and the DPD as regional representation. The two complement each other,” Najamudin said here on Monday.
He said the constitutional forum should be an opportunity to strengthen stakeholders’ commitment to ensuring development reaches every region.
According to him, national development can only succeed if regions grow evenly and receive equal space in the process.
He said the DPD has the honor of hosting this year’s annual session, describing the DPD as a pillar of Indonesia’s parliament with a constitutional mandate to bring regional interests to the national level.
Najamudin said aspirations gathered by DPD members through working visits, oversight, and recesses across 38 provinces do not stop as mere reports but are processed into policy recommendations discussed with DPD bodies and relevant ministries.
He added that these aspirations also form part of the substance the DPD brings to the annual session, representing the voices of local communities before the president and all parliamentary elements.
Beyond bringing regional aspirations, Najamudin said the DPD continues to carry out its oversight function over national development, noting that current government priority programs have shown growing attention to the regions, both in program implementation and budget support.
“Many government programs are ultimately aimed at the regions. Many of the aspirations we have conveyed to ministries have been well followed up, and this shows that development work is becoming more effective,” he noted.
