DPR marks 81 years with renewed commitment to public aspirations

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) remains committed to listening to public input and criticism, House Speaker Puan Maharani affirmed during a plenary session marking the legislature’s 81st anniversary.

She acknowledged that there is still room for the DPR to pursue reform and improve its performance in legislation, budgeting, oversight, and parliamentary diplomacy.

“Criticism should not be regarded as a gap between the people and the DPR, we must view it as part of a democratic relationship that keeps the DPR grounded in people’s aspirations, realities, and lives,” Puan remarked at the DPR Building in Jakarta on Tuesday.

She reassured the public that the DPR would continue taking their input into account as it seeks to improve and transform itself to better serve the nation.

The parliamentarian emphasized that assessments of the legislature’s performance should not focus solely on the number of laws passed, sessions held, or budget allocations approved.

Puan underlined the importance of the DPR reflecting on its ability to deliver tangible benefits to the public, improve quality of life, and support development across sectors.

“The performance of the DPR as the people’s representative is not solely determined by how much it has worked on but by how meaningful its work for citizens is,” she stated.

She went on to note that the 81-year milestone represents an opportunity for the House to renew its commitment to public service and self-improvement while building public trust and strengthening democratic practices in Indonesia.

The lawmaker stressed that public trust is shaped by people’s perception of how well the DPR can translate their aspirations into impactful policies.

She further described the 81-year milestone as part of Indonesia’s ongoing journey toward the full realization of popular sovereignty.

“As our institution turns 81, let us all continue to engage in self-reflection and work together to create a DPR that is capable of bringing concrete changes to people’s lives,” the speaker told legislators.
