Jakarta (ANTARA) – Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir said the Merdeka Run 2026 will bring together people from all walks of life to celebrate the 81st anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence.
“The Merdeka Run is one of the most anticipated events because it directly involves participation from all segments of society,” Thohir told the media after a cross-agency meeting on the organization of Merdeka Run 2026 here on Friday.
Merdeka Run 2026 is scheduled to take place on August 29, featuring an eight-kilometer route starting from the Merdeka Palace complex in Jakarta.
The minister said the free running event will be attended by representatives from the government, business community, public figures, celebrities, and the general public. He also invited members of the media to take part in the run.
The running event is primarily intended for Indonesian citizens. However, the organizers also welcome foreign nationals who wish to participate, as part of showcasing Indonesia as an open society in the global community.
According to him, the event reflects gratitude as Indonesia marks its 81st commemoration of Independence Day, with the country continuing to grow and gaining recognition globally not only in geopolitics and the economy, but also in its creative achievements.
The minister said the works of Indonesians, including films, music, sports, and other fields, continue to gain recognition on the global stage.
“That is certainly thanks to the Indonesian people who continue to innovate. Merdeka Run is also part of efforts to strengthen collaboration,” he said.
Thohir added that the event will feature various activities, including a drone show, a cultural costume parade, and other entertainment.
“But what is most important is how the public can come together through collaboration,” he said.
