Makassar, South Sulawesi (ANTARA) – Culture Minister Fadli Zon urged young people to keep the spirit of the Youth Pledge alive through concrete action, including embracing cultural diversity and contributing to the advancement of Indonesian culture.

“The spirit of the Youth Pledge must continue to live on, be passed down, and be put into practice,” he said while leading a ceremony marking the 98th Youth Pledge Day at Fort Rotterdam in Makassar on Wednesday.

He said the pledge, declared by Indonesian youth on October 28, 1928, marked a historic milestone in the nation’s struggle and demonstrated that differences in background need not stand in the way of unity.

“Amid the diversity of ethnic groups, languages, traditions, and cultural expressions, young people must maintain unity while preserving the diversity that shapes our national identity,” he said.

Zon explained that patriotism is reflected in love for the homeland, expressed through maintaining unity, preserving cultural diversity, and understanding the history of the nation’s struggle.

He added that perseverance enables young people to continue learning, develop their potential, and face changing times without giving up.

“Being patriotic means loving Indonesia through concrete action and meaningful contributions. Perseverance is essential for the next generation to keep learning, striving, developing their potential, creating works, and introducing innovations that help Indonesian culture thrive,” he said.

Beyond patriotism and perseverance, Zon emphasized empathy as a foundation for building relationships based on mutual respect.

He said empathy could be demonstrated by listening to others, respecting differences, and supporting one another through the spirit of mutual cooperation.

“With integrity, cooperation, and care, we can carry forward the spirit of the Youth Pledge while contributing to cultural advancement as part of efforts to build Indonesia’s future,” Zon said.
