Floods inundate 12 villages in Indonesia’s West Aceh

Meulaboh, Aceh (ANTARA) – West Aceh’s disaster management agency has deployed a joint response team after floods inundated 12 villages across three subdistricts, with water reaching several dozen centimeters in some areas.

“The flooding was caused by heavy rain and overflowing rivers in inland West Aceh,” acting agency chief Dharmawan told reporters in Meulaboh on Sunday.

The affected villages in Pante Ceureumen Subdistrict are Keutambang, Lawet, Jambak, Puloe Teungoh, Lango, Canggai and Sikundo.

In Sikundo, floodwaters eroded a road and a school fence. River currents remained strong as of midday Sunday, Dharmawan said.

Four villages in Sungai Mas subdistrict – Tungkop, Kajeung, Lancong and Geudong – were also affected by flooding.

In Woyla Barat subdistrict, flooding hit Napai Village, where water levels rose sharply and began inundating residents’ homes.

The flooding began on Saturday (October 31) after the Krueng Meureubo in Pante Ceureumen and Krueng Woyla in Sungai Mas overflowed, Dharmawan said.

The agency urged residents living along riverbanks to remain alert as river levels remained high and some homes had already been flooded.
