Flores quake response shifts beyond emergency aid

Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) – The Udayana Military Command and other agencies are focusing on restoring power, communications, fuel supplies, roads and bridges, alongside aid distribution, after the earthquake struck parts of Flores, East Nusa Tenggara.

Udayana Military Commander Maj. Gen. Piek Budyakto said here, Tuesday that disaster response must address all aspects of recovery.

Once residents’ basic needs are met, he said, essential services and supporting infrastructure must also be restored quickly.

“President’s aid has been sent to affected areas. The military remains on standby to help communities, especially those hardest hit,” Piek said.

Mbay and Maumere are receiving particular attention because they suffered some of the earthquake’s heaviest impacts, he said.

Military personnel have been deployed to help local governments accelerate the response on the ground.

Beyond evacuations and logistics distribution, coordination is focused on restoring power and communications, which are vital for residents and emergency operations, Piek said.

Fuel supplies are also a priority, as energy is needed for vehicles, aid distribution, public services and recovery efforts in affected areas.

Roads and bridges are another priority because disrupted transport routes can hamper aid deliveries to communities, he said.

Transport links need to be restored as quickly as possible to ensure assistance reaches affected residents, Piek said.

Aid centers in Labuan Bajo and Maumere have also been activated to strengthen coordination and speed deliveries to areas in need.

Udayana Military Command spokesman Col. Inf. Amrizal Nasution said the military, government and other agencies would continue coordinated operations throughout the emergency response.

“Our priorities are public safety, faster evacuations, basic needs and restoring affected areas so residents can resume normal activities,” he said.

Amrizal said disaster response requires speed, accuracy and cross-sector coordination, with each agency working within its mandate while prioritizing affected communities.

The Flores earthquake response, therefore, will extend beyond emergency aid deliveries to broader recovery efforts, he added.
