Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian government has arranged free bus and train services for passengers whose flights are diverted from Soekarno-Hatta (Soetta) International Airport to alternative airports after the airport temporarily suspends flights due to volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau.
Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi stated that several alternative airports across Java are operating to handle diverted flights, including Kertajati International Airport, Juanda International Airport, Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA), Ahmad Yani International Airport in Semarang, and Adi Soemarmo Airport in Solo.
“Alternative ground transportation is free. Whichever airport is used, InJourney Airports will provide the service in coordination with Angkasa Pura and the airlines,” Dudy said in Jakarta on Sunday.
Airlines are responsible for informing affected passengers about rerouting options and departure procedures to allow them to adjust their travel plans accordingly. Passengers can choose to proceed with ground transit to alternative departure points or request a ticket refund/cancellation.
To facilitate ground transfers, state airport operator InJourney Airports (PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia) has deployed free shuttle buses connecting Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to major cities including Yogyakarta, Semarang, Solo, and Surabaya.
“Airport staff will provide information directly to affected passengers in the terminals, including registration procedures,” InJourney Airports Corporate Secretary Group Head Arie Ahsanurrohim said.
Affected passengers can register for shuttle departures at help desks set up in Terminals 1, 2, and 3 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
Eight buses were initially prepared, two for each primary destination route, with the first departures taking place on Sunday (Sept. 6) at 9 p.m. local time (WIB). Additional vehicles and schedules will be added based on demand.
“The provision of these buses is part of the Service Recovery Activation (SRA) procedure following the suspension of flight operations for safety reasons due to volcanic ash dispersal,” Arie said.
The SRA protocol also provides food and light refreshments, and dedicated waiting areas inside the terminals. These passenger-handling measures will remain active until the airport is officially reopened.
InJourney Airports urged air travelers to monitor official flight updates from their respective airlines.
As of Sunday night, the Ministry of Transportation had temporarily suspended operations at eight airports in Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Lampung, and South Sumatra to maintain flight safety.
The closures originally remained in effect through midnight local time before being re-evaluated based on atmospheric testing.
The affected locations comprise Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten; Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta; Radin Inten II Airport in Lampung; Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung; Budiarto Airport in Curug, Banten; Pondok Cabe Airport in South Tangerang, Banten; Taufik Kiemas Airport in Pesisir Barat, Lampung; and Atung Bungsu Airport in Pagar Alam, S Sumatra.
