Gas power influx revises RI renewable energy mix to 17 percent

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ministry recorded a slight decline in Indonesia’s new and renewable energy (NRE) mix, from 18 percent to 17 percent, mainly due to an increased share of gas-fired power generation.

“Today, the new and renewable energy mix is 17 percent. Yesterday, in the first quarter, it was 18 percent,” the ministry’s Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation, Eniya Listiani Dewi, said at the 12th Indonesia International Geothermal Convention & Exhibition (IIGCE) 2026 in Jakarta on Wednesday.

“Perhaps there was a small increase in gas-fired power generation, resulting in a slight correction,” she added.

Eniya said fatty acid methyl ester (FAME), a palm oil-based derivative used in the national biodiesel blending program, remained the largest contributor to the renewable energy mix at 5.2 percent.

Hydropower ranked as the second-largest contributor at 3.5 percent, while geothermal energy accounted for 2.2 percent of the national energy mix.

Eniya expressed optimism that geothermal energy’s contribution could double to 4.5 percent under the ongoing Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL), as an additional 5.2 gigawatts (GW) of geothermal capacity is brought online.

Meanwhile, solar power accounted for 0.5 percent, the smallest share of the national energy mix.

To accelerate clean energy development, President Prabowo Subianto recently outlined an ambitious strategy that includes developing 100 GW of solar power capacity and retiring 13 GW of diesel-fired power plants (PLTD).

Highlighting Indonesia’s location along the equator as an advantage for solar power generation, particularly in supplying electricity to remote communities, President Prabowo said an initial 30 GW of solar capacity would be developed starting in 2026.

Following the directive, ESDM Minister Bahlil Lahadalia announced that open tenders for the initial 30 GW solar power development would be launched soon.
