Govt calls architects vital in sustainable infrastructure planning

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Deputy Minister of Public Works Diana Kusumastuti stressed the importance of involving architects in infrastructure development planning, from dams to toll roads, to ensure designs that consider technical and environmental aspects.

“The Public Works Ministry recognizes that reliable infrastructure development must be rooted in whom? Architects,” Kusumastuti said at the Jakarta Architecture Festival and M Bloc Design Week (MBDW) here on Friday.

According to her, architects contribute not only to building aesthetics, but also support infrastructure development that is inclusive, sustainable, and climate-resilient.

She said that architects’ involvement is needed in planning dams and toll roads so infrastructure designs can be integrated with the surrounding environment.

“Take dams, for example; they require proper planning,” she said.

Besides new infrastructure development, Kusumastuti highlighted the importance of reusing historic buildings as public spaces. She assessed that old buildings, such as M Bloc, can be put back to use while still observing preservation principles.

“If a heritage building is already 50 years old and has been designated as heritage, it must not be demolished. Even if it is demolished, there are principles we must follow,” she said.

She also said collaboration between the government and architects is needed to design living spaces that are environmentally friendly, energy-efficient, and reflect the nation’s cultural identity.

“Close collaboration between the government and architecture professionals is necessary,” she stated.

Therefore, she hoped the Jakarta Architecture Festival would serve as a platform for dialogue to produce real innovation in public space development, not only in Jakarta but also in various regions in Indonesia.

MBDW 2026 runs from October 23 to November 1, 2026. This is the 5th year of MBDW, which carries the theme “Daur Rupa.”

Held in six cities at seven venues, MBDW 2026 brought together designers, architects, creative industry players, communities, and the public to explore design’s contribution to building a more sustainable future.
