Yogyakarta (ANTARA) – Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Fauzan has called on universities across Indonesia to identify their in-house disaster management experts.

Speaking in Yogyakarta on Wednesday, Fauzan said experts play a key role in helping the government and relevant agencies tackle disasters, including the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.

“As we mentioned during the press conference on the Mount Anak Krakatau eruption, universities have been asked to identify experts specializing in disaster management,” he told the press after opening the Yogyakarta Science and Technology Symposium.

Fauzan said the Yogyakarta higher education consortium launched at the symposium could serve as a platform to connect public and private universities with local governments and industry players to mobilize academic expertise.

The consortium ensures that experts with the right competencies are available to collaborate with relevant agencies, paving the way for academic research and empirical findings to inform policy decisions, the deputy minister said.

“The contribution of universities lies in providing empirical data that can serve as the basis for future policymaking,” Fauzan added.

Additionally, Setyabudi Indartono, Head of the Region V Yogyakarta Higher Education Service Bureau (LLDIKTI), noted that the launch of the consortium is a key step toward aligning local needs with university resources.

LLDIKTI has identified various regional issues that can be addressed through academic expertise. From that process, 22 clusters have been formed to help universities pinpoint challenges that match their specific fields of expertise.

According to him, each university is expected to evaluate which issues align best with its capacity to determine its focus, ensuring the consortium goes beyond networking and addresses concrete challenges collaboratively.
