Gov’t plans Sade Village reconstruction after devastating fire

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Culture Minister Fadli Zon said the government is currently drawing up plans for the reconstruction and revitalization of Sade Traditional Village in Central Lombok district, West Nusa Tenggara, by paying attention to disaster resilience.

Zon, met at the Presidential Palace Complex here on Friday, said President Prabowo Subianto has instructed that the reconstruction and revitalization of Sade Traditional Village be carried out immediately following a fire on August 22.

“I have also spoken with the (West Nusa Tenggara) Governor. There are 75, if I’m not mistaken, traditional buildings. There are also stalls and a mosque. The plan is being drawn up, and we do need to rebuild and revitalize Sade Traditional Village soon,” Zon said.

He explained that several aspects will be taken into consideration in drawing up the plan, including climate conditions such as the dry and prolonged dry season.

According to him, this consideration is important because a number of traditional buildings use wood and thatch materials that are easily flammable. In addition, electrical short circuits are also a factor that needs to be anticipated.

He said similar fire incidents have previously occurred in traditional villages in East Nusa Tenggara and several other regions.

“This is a challenge going forward, I think it may need to be equipped with fire suppression,” he said.

Previously, a fire broke out at Sade Traditional Village at around 10 p.m. local time on August 22.

Several witnesses said the fire first appeared in one house before spreading to other buildings, most of which used flammable materials such as wood, bamboo, and grass thatch.

Sade Traditional Village is one of the oldest traditional villages on Lombok Island. The village has stood since the 16th century and has been passed down through 15 generations.
