Jakarta (ANTARA) – House of Representatives (DPR RI) Speaker Puan Maharani has urged the government to leave no stone unturned to help people affected by floods in various regions in Indonesia since public safety must be prioritized.

“I am also concerned about the floods, landslides, and flash floods that occurred in several areas in the country. The government must act quickly to save residents whose homes are affected by floods,” Maharani noted in a statement here, Tuesday.

The House speaker made the statement pertaining to the floods that hit several areas in Jakarta, Karawang, Sintang, South Aceh, Mamuju (West Sulawesi), and other regions.

Maharani urged the government to prepare all facilities and necessities for people whose houses got inundated, including logistics.

“Ensure that people, who have to evacuate, are placed in safe and comfortable shelters. The government must guarantee the basic needs, including clean water, of children, toddlers, elderly, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers,” she emphasized.

The House speaker additionally urged the government to ensure the needs of residents that still opted to stay in their flooded houses. Electricity supply must be guaranteed by prioritizing the safety principles, she added.

Maharani expressed her deep condolences over the deaths of residents in the flash floods and landslides in several areas, such as the flash floods in Batu City that claimed the lives of seven people.

She urged governments, especially those in disaster-prone regions, to take anticipatory measures due to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) warning against La Nina that can increase the likelihood of hydro-meteorological disasters.

“We are optimistic that the government would continue to undertake disaster mitigation efforts to minimize the impact of natural disasters. In addition, a long-term solution should be prepared to handle frequently flooded areas, so that people do not continue to experience difficulties,” she remarked.

Maharani reminded the public to increase vigil during the rainy season and appealed to people to remain careful while conducting activities outside their homes.
