Govt stated Mt. Anak Krakatau’s 25-hour eruption episode ends

Jakarta (ANTARA) – A Geological Agency at the Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) recorded the continuous eruption episode of Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait has ended after lasting 25 hours.

The continuous eruption episode, which began on Friday (Sept 4) at 11:07 p.m. local time, officially ended on Sunday (Sept 6) at 12:04 a.m., Head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, said in an evaluation report received here on Monday.

“Following the end of that episode, Mount Anak Krakatau’s volcanic activity transitioned back to Strombolian eruption characteristics, marked by the recording of three Strombolian eruption earthquakes,” Saria said.

The Geological Agency interpreted the return of Strombolian eruptions as a sign that the long, continuous eruption phase had ended, though it said the probability of subsequent eruptions in the following period remains high.

Based on the instrumental observations on September 6-7, the Geological Agency recorded three eruption earthquakes, nine emission earthquakes, 93 low-frequency earthquakes, 98 hybrid or multi-phase earthquakes, four continuous tremor earthquakes, and one shallow volcanic earthquake.

The Real-time Seismic Amplitude Measurement (RSAM) amplitude graph, which had spiked on Saturday (Sept 5), has shown a declining trend since Sunday (Sept 6).

Meanwhile, the data from tiltmeter deformation at Tanjung Station recorded indications of slight inflation since early August 2026, while Lava93 Station showed constant pattern.

Based on the comprehensive evaluation, the Geological Agency has kept Mount Anak Krakatau’s activity level at Level III or Alert status.

According to Saria, the Agency recommends the public, tourists, and climbers to avoid approaching or engaging in activities within the three-kilometer danger radius of the active crater.

Coastal residents at Banten and Lampung provinces are advised to remain calm, not believe hoaxes about potential tsunamis from the eruption, and are advised to wear masks during outdoor activities to prevent respiratory problems from exposure to volcanic ash.
