Green, digital sectors to strengthen Indonesia-South Korea ties

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Green industries and digital transformation are key pillars for deepening Indonesia-South Korea economic ties, South Korea’s Ambassador to Indonesia Yoon Soon-gu said in Jakarta on Thursday.

“Environmentally friendly sectors and digital transformation are two important pillars for further developing bilateral economic relations between Indonesia and South Korea,” Yoon said at an event marking South Korea’s National Day and Armed Forces Day.

He said South Korea imports substantial volumes of natural resources from Indonesia, including coal, making Indonesia its second-largest source of coal imports by volume.

“The same applies to other natural resources, such as nickel. Indonesia exports substantial natural resources to South Korea,” Yoon said.

South Korea, meanwhile, has made major investments in Indonesia’s manufacturing sector, particularly steel, petrochemicals, and automotive industries, he said.

“These manufactured products are largely what Indonesia imports from Korea,” Yoon said.

He said the two countries should broaden their economic relationship beyond trade to include investment and sustainable development.

“We will not limit the relationship to trade. Investment and sustainable development aspects are also important,” he said.

Yoon said bilateral relations have continued to develop since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1973, particularly after they upgraded their relationship to a Special Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in April.

South Korea is also committed to supporting Indonesia’s Vision 2045 through cooperation in oil, steel, environmental, and digital sectors, he said.

At the same event, Republic of Korea Ambassador to ASEAN Lee Chul said South Korea-ASEAN relations had reached their highest level following the establishment of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2024.

“Based on the Korea-ASEAN CSP Vision launched in 2025, Korea continues to promote substantive and forward-looking cooperation as a contributor, stepping stone, and partner for ASEAN,” Lee said.
