Gresik’s settlement planning could eradicate slum areas in RI: AHY

Gresik, E Java (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) has called for the settlement planning model in Campurejo Village, Gresik District, East Java, should be replicated nationwide to speed up slum elimination.

“Hopefully, this can become a model for managing other slum areas and bring benefits to the community,” AHY said during the inauguration of a restructured settlement area in Campurejo Village on Saturday.

AHY emphasised the settlement restructuring should be carried out collaboratively by the central government, local governments, and the private sector to deliver a sustainable impact for the public.

“We need to keep moving forward, so that communities not only become more prosperous, but also live in greener and more pleasant surroundings. This starts from our homes and our families across Indonesia,” he said.

He underscored the settlement restructuring should not focus solely on house construction, but must also be accompanied by basic infrastructure development, including neighborhood roads, drainage systems, clean water access, sanitation, and waste management.

The transformation in Campurejo, he said, demonstrates how integrated restructuring efforts can improve environmental quality and housing comfort while unlocking potential for local economic activity.

The initiative, carried out via the Integrated Slum Eradication Thematic Special Allocation Fund (DAK) which covers a 7.11-hectare coastal area home to 1,152 Campurejo residents.

The revitalisation includes the construction and renovation of 166 housing units, consisting of 102 new homes, 43 substandard home upgrades, and 21 new homes supported through corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes.

In addition, the area has been equipped with paved neighborhood roads, drainage systems, clean water networks, a domestic wastewater treatment plant, and a 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) waste management facility.
