Jakarta (ANTARA) – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Jakarta on Saturday evening to begin his official visit to Indonesia, which includes a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto.

Guterres landed at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, where he was welcomed by Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir, who represented the Indonesian government.

Indonesia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Umar Hadi; Acting Director General for Multilateral Cooperation at the Foreign Ministry, Denny Abdi; and UN Resident Coordinator in Indonesia, Gita Sabharwal, were also present to welcome the UN chief.

In an official statement, the Presidential Secretariat said Guterres’ visit offered an opportunity to strengthen Indonesia-UN relations and explore new avenues for multilateral cooperation in addressing global challenges.

“The visit comes at a time of global challenges that require intensive dialogue and cooperation among nations,” the Presidential Secretariat said.

“The meeting with President Prabowo provides an opportunity for Indonesia and the United Nations to strengthen communication and exchange views on issues of mutual concern,” it added.

Guterres is visiting Indonesia from October 17 to 19, 2026, in what will be among his final official visits before his term as UN secretary-general ends later this year.

Earlier, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said the visit would help “strengthen cooperation between Indonesia and the United Nations within the multilateral system.”

During his visit, Guterres is scheduled to visit the Indonesian National Armed Forces’ Peacekeeping Center, where he will meet Indonesian personnel preparing for deployment to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).

The visit to the center is intended to “pay tribute to Indonesia’s longstanding commitment to UN peacekeeping,” Haq said.

“The Secretary-General will lay a wreath at a memorial to honor the ultimate sacrifice of 50 Indonesian peacekeepers who perished while serving under the UN flag,” Haq added.

In addition to meeting Prabowo, Guterres will deliver an address on the future of multilateralism at the Foreign Ministry during his stay in Jakarta, Haq said.
