Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Director General of Primary and Community Health at the Ministry of Health Maria Endang Sumiwi has called on the public to embrace people with Down syndrome to help alleviate their feelings of loneliness, while encouraging parents to make optimal use of healthcare services at community health centers (Puskesmas).

Speaking at a healthy walk event with children with Down syndrome here on Sunday, Sumiwi emphasized that health is not merely about being free from physical illness, but also includes mental well-being, which can be fostered through social acceptance.

“Loneliness occurs when someone feels unaccepted, excluded, or overlooked. It has real consequences for health, particularly mental health,” she said.

Sumiwi encouraged the public to take simple steps to help people with disabilities overcome loneliness, such as greeting them, offering a smile, and inviting them to play.

The Health Ministry also urged parents to actively monitor their children’s growth and development through integrated primary healthcare services.

“Visit your local community health center, join a community, and share your journey. We are here to support you,” she said.
