I express my utmost condolences over the tragedy
Jakarta (ANTARA) – House of Representatives (DPR RI) speaker Puan Maharani, during her visit to Seoul, South Korea, paid homage to victims of the crowd crush tragedy on Halloween night in Itaewon in which 156 people were killed.
Maharani visited the tragedy site along with former president Megawati Soekarnoputri and Indonesian Ambassador to South Korea Gandi Sulistyanto.
According to the statement on Thursday, after saying their prayer for the victims of the tragedy, Maharani and Soekarnoputri laid wreaths at the memorial. They then walked down the Itaewon area and visited the tragedy site where the crowd crush occurred.

“I express my utmost condolences over the tragedy,” as written by the speaker on the guest book at the Itaewon tragedy memorial.
She expressed solidarity with South Korea over the tragedy, as Indonesia had also lost 135 lives in a similar accident in the Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy on October 1.
“Representing the people of Indonesia, I express my condolences to the South Korean people over the Itaewon tragedy,” Maharani stated.
The speaker highlighted that the tragedy offers a lesson for all parties that organized large-scale events, as the Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy was also an eye-opener for Indonesia.

“Security and operational standards should be in place in events that attract large crowds,” she remarked.
Earlier, the DPR RI speaker also expressed her condolences over the Itaewon tragedy during the meeting with South Korean National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin-pyo.
“I wish to express my condolences over the tragedy in Itaewon on October 29, 2022. Indonesia had also experienced a similar tragedy in the Kanjuruhan Stadium earlier this month,” Maharani remarked.
At the meeting, she also highlighted the need to bolster the crowd control approach and preventive measures to avert overcrowding at a public event that could be fatal for visitors.
