Human Rights Ministry recommends recovery unit for MBG recipients

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Human Rights Ministry has urged the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) to establish a unit to help residents facing health problems linked to the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program.

Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai proposed using the Maastricht Guidelines as a reference for a BGN unit dedicated to recovering victims affected by problems involving the program.

The guidelines provide a framework for identifying and addressing basic rights violations under international law, including through rehabilitation, restitution and compensation, Pigai said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

A recovery scheme based on the guidelines should specify benefits for people affected by MBG problems, including medical care and compensation for students unable to attend school, he said.

Pigai said BGN, central and regional governments, or businesses involved in meal production should provide medical support to MBG recipients who require hospitalization.

A systematic recovery mechanism would allow authorities to address cases across Indonesia consistently and simultaneously, Pigai said.

The Human Rights Ministry recognizes the MBG program’s objectives as positive but believes its implementation requires continued evaluation to address unresolved problems, he said.

Pigai said some aspects of program management had fallen short of expectations, making continued evaluation necessary to improve implementation.

He said BGN and other relevant institutions had taken corrective measures to improve the program’s governance and reduce shortcomings.

Pigai urged the public to remain patient, saying BGN chief Sudaryono had introduced corrective measures while improvements would require support from all stakeholders.

The Human Rights Ministry also contributes to the national priority program by monitoring and protecting the rights of MBG recipients, Pigai said.
