Indian envoy calls Indonesia key Global South voice in BRICS

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Sandeep Chakravorty praised Indonesia’s role in championing the interests of the Global South within the BRICS forum.

He noted that BRICS provides a strategic platform for Indonesia as the government seeks to broaden its engagement in international cooperation frameworks.

“Indonesia is a leading power in the world, straddling the Indo-Pacific emerging and developing economies. Indonesia is the strong voice of the Global South,” Chakravorty said in a written interview with ANTARA here on Friday discussing India’s BRICS Chairmanship.

“Having Indonesia within BRICS gives it greater heft,” he added.

The ambassador emphasized that Jakarta’s role perfectly aligns with the objectives of India’s 2026 chairmanship, which seeks to build an “inclusive, action-oriented, and future-ready platform responsive to the priorities of the emerging markets and developing countries.”

BRICS represents approximately 49 percent of the world’s population, 40 percent of global GDP, and 26 percent of global trade, making the bloc a crucial vehicle for advancing the aspirations of developing nations.

“In this context, Indonesia’s involvement (in BRICS) is crucial,” Chakravorty said.

He also lauded Indonesia’s active participation in high-level meetings, dialogues, and working groups throughout the year, which have spanned ministerial, technical, business, and civil society levels.

“We are extremely satisfied by Indonesia’s participation in all BRICS events,” the envoy remarked.

Indonesia officially joined the BRICS bloc on January 6, 2025. The 18th BRICS Summit, themed “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” is set to kick off in New Delhi this weekend, on September 12–13.
