Indonesia appreciates Guterres’ leadership as UN tenure nears end

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono praised Antonio Guterres for his leadership and service to the United Nations as the secretary-general nears the end of his decade-long tenure.

“Secretary-General António Guterres has led this organization through an exceptionally challenging period: wars and geopolitical tensions, a global pandemic, humanitarian emergencies, and rapid technological transformation,” he said.

Sugiono made the remarks while outlining Indonesia’s positions on global issues during the 81st UN General Assembly session in New York on Saturday (Sept. 26), as observed online from Jakarta on Sunday.

He stressed that effective leadership is essential to an effective multilateral system, citing an Indonesian philosophy that leaders must “lead by example from the front, build confidence while standing among the people, and empower from behind.”

“Leadership is not simply about commanding; it is about exercising wisdom and giving others the strength to move forward,” Sugiono said.

Sugiono also acknowledged Guterres’ contribution to keeping the United Nations relevant as a platform for dialogue and collective problem-solving amid evolving global challenges.

He said the next secretary-general would inherit responsibility for upholding the UN Charter, strengthening the institution and advancing multilateralism that delivers tangible benefits to the international community.

“Effective leadership must also be accompanied by the full commitment of member states to make multilateralism work,” he said.

Guterres will conclude his tenure on Dec. 31, 2026. His successor will be chosen from seven candidates and appointed by the General Assembly on the Security Council’s recommendation.

The candidates are Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, nominated by Guyana; Rebeca Grynspan, Costa Rica; María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés, Antigua and Barbuda; and Ivonne A-Baki, Tonga.

They also include Rafael Mariano Grossi, nominated by Argentina; Macky Sall, Burundi; and Olara Otunnu, Uganda.

The next secretary-general will assume office on Jan. 1, 2027.
