Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia has received Australia’s pledge of full support in efforts to combat cybercrime, particularly online scams.

Australian Minister for Home Affairs Tony Burke made the commitment after attending the 12th Indonesia-Australia Ministerial Council Meeting on Law and Security in South Jakarta on Thursday.

Burke said Australia stood in solidarity with Indonesia and was committed to supporting efforts to crack down on online scam operations.

He stressed the urgency of tackling online scams, noting that people worldwide had fallen victim to this increasingly prevalent form of crime.

On bilateral initiatives, Burke highlighted ongoing cooperation between the Australian Federal Police and the Indonesian National Police (Polri), with support from the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC).

He described AUSTRAC as a key mechanism for helping the two countries trace financial flows linked to online scams and conduct broader financial investigations.

Burke also noted that Indonesia and Australia had maintained close cooperation for years, well before the latest ministerial meeting. He said the meeting provided an opportunity for both countries to reaffirm their commitment to deepening bilateral ties and expressed hope that it would pave the way for stronger joint efforts to combat online scams.

Meanwhile, Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Dudung Abdurrachman said the meeting had produced a joint communiqué outlining the two countries’ shared commitment to expanding cooperation.

He said both countries were committed to strengthening their strategic partnership, enhancing maritime security, combating terrorism and transnational crime, reinforcing border security, and expanding cybersecurity cooperation.

Abdurrachman also underscored the importance of closer coordination and capacity-building to address increasingly complex security challenges.
