Indonesia backs UK ban on imports from illegal Israeli settlements

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia and seven other nations have voiced their support for the United Kingdom’s decision to officially ban the import of goods and restrict services linked to illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.

In a statement issued by the Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry here on Thursday, the foreign ministers of Indonesia, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) expressed hope that the action would be emulated by the broader international community.

The joint statement emphasized that the effort is crucial for upholding international law and demanding accountability from entities and individuals involved in illegal Israeli settlement activities.

The import ban aligns with international legal guidelines and United Nations mandates, notably United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334 (2016), which condemns the expansion of Israeli settlements, as well as the Advisory Opinion issued by the International Court of Justice on July 19, 2024.

All UN member states are obligated to reject the legality of the Israeli occupation and are prohibited from providing any form of assistance that could perpetuate it, the statement noted.

According to a report by the Turkish news agency Anadolu, British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband announced a ban on Tuesday (September 8) on imports from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, along with sanctions targeting companies and individuals involved in settlement expansion.

Miliband also announced additional sanctions on extremist Israeli settlers accused of supporting or inciting violence against Palestinians.

Furthermore, the UK will refuse to issue new arms export licenses for items that contribute to the continuation of the occupation, while maintaining the suspension of 30 existing export licenses.

Miliband said the British government agrees that there is “ethnic cleansing of Palestinians” in the occupied West Bank perpetrated by Israeli “settler terrorists.”
