Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia can broaden international support for Palestine by engaging countries beyond those that have consistently backed Palestinian statehood, international relations analyst Muhammad Syaroni Rofii said.
“Indonesia can build support beyond the circle that has consistently backed Palestine. Its membership in several UN bodies can be maximized for lobbying,” said Syaroni of the University of Indonesia.
Speaking to ANTARA on Friday, he said attitudes toward Palestine were shifting in some Western countries. The European Union has criticized Israel’s actions in Gaza and plans for settlements in the E1 area.
Syaroni also cited British Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s public criticism of what he described as injustice suffered by Palestinians. Burnham has backed a two-state solution and sanctions targeting Israeli settlements.
Indonesia’s positions in various UN bodies and forums can also be used to strengthen diplomacy and build broader support for an independent Palestinian state, Syaroni said.
Most U.N. member states have recognized Palestine, creating an opportunity for Indonesia and other countries to broaden international support, he said.
“Looking at the trend of support at the U.N., most countries have recognized Palestine. Only the United States and some others still refuse,” he added.
Indonesia and members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation should persuade the United States to implement the two-state solution, Syaroni said.
At a ministerial meeting of the Global Alliance for the Implementation of the Two-State Solution in New York, Indonesia urged faster implementation amid continuing violence and displacement in Palestine.
“Palestinians still face violence and displacement. We must end this reality,” said Sugiono, who served as Indonesia’s foreign minister from Oct. 21, 2024, to Oct. 1, 2026.
Sugiono said international support for the two-state solution had grown since the New York Declaration and U.N. Security Council Resolution 2803 were adopted.
More countries have also recognized Palestine, he said.
