Indonesia concludes SAR operations for Mutiara Sentosa II ferry fire

Surabaya, E Java (ANTARA) – Indonesian Deputy Transportation Minister Suntana has announced that the search and rescue (SAR) operations for the KMP Mutiara Sentosa II passenger ferry fire have officially concluded following the successful evacuation of all passengers.

“We are deeply saddened by the incident that befell our brothers and sisters. Thank God, all (rescue and evacuation) processes have been completed today,” Suntana said during a press conference on Tuesday.

He stated that the government immediately deployed all relevant agencies to the site to manage the emergency, encompassing both rescue operations and ensuring the victims’ needs and rights were met.

The government has already processed the disbursement of financial compensation to the victims and their families, reflecting the state’s commitment to protecting the public in the wake of transportation disasters.

The deputy minister added that the final evacuation of 62 passengers from Masalembu Island proceeded smoothly. All survivors have been transported to a hotel to rest before undergoing further procedures.

He confirmed that all accommodation expenses during the recovery period are being fully covered by the ship’s operator.

Suntana also expressed his appreciation to all parties involved in the emergency response, including the Transportation Ministry, the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the Indonesian Military (TNI), and the National Police (Polri).

Furthermore, state-owned insurance company Jasa Raharja, state-owned port operator Pelindo, the Tanjung Perak Harbormaster and Port Authority Office (KSOP), local administrations, and various other agencies also participated in the massive evacuation effort.

“We extend our gratitude to all parties who contributed, offered support, and prayed for the smooth execution of this entire operation,” the deputy minister added.
