Indonesia, Egypt to expand educational cooperation

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia and Egypt agreed to expand educational cooperation, including increasing scholarship opportunities for Indonesian students in Egypt and student exchanges between the two countries.

“Indonesia is ready to expand educational cooperation through student exchanges, university partnerships, joint research, and exploring opportunities for collaboration in other fields,” President Prabowo Subianto said during a joint press statement with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Sunday.

He then expressed appreciation for Egypt’s support in providing additional scholarships, particularly in the fields of medicine, engineering, and science.

Indonesia has also maintained longstanding educational ties with Egypt’s Al-Azhar University, where Indonesian language and literature are taught.

“We aim to improve the education of Indonesian students in Egypt. This way, we are inviting Egyptian educational institutions to visit Indonesia and send lecturers and teaching staff,” Prabowo said.

On the same occasion, President El-Sisi said the two leaders had also discussed cultural and educational cooperation, describing both fields as integral to the longstanding ties between the Indonesian and Egyptian peoples.

He reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to strengthening friendship and solidarity between the two nations and fostering greater mutual understanding.

“Furthermore, we are ready to welcome thousands of Indonesian students to study at Al-Azhar and other universities in Egypt,” he said.

President Prabowo received a visit from President El-Sisi at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Sunday afternoon.

El-Sisi’s visit to Indonesia follows Prabowo’s visits to Egypt in 2024 and 2025. Indonesia is the last stop on El-Sisi’s Asian itinerary, after South Korea on October 6-9 and Malaysia on October 9-10, 2026.

The Egyptian President arrived at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base on Saturday (October 10), where his aircraft was escorted into Indonesian airspace by a formation of Sukhoi Su-27/30 and F-16 fighter jets.
