Indonesia expands Garuda Schools to boost technology skills

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Sugiono said the government’s Garuda Superior Schools program aims to strengthen technology mastery among Indonesia’s younger generation, a key factor in driving national progress.

“We understand that the success of a country, the greatness of a country, is also determined by how that country can master technology,” Sugiono told reporters after visiting State Islamic Senior High School 4 (MAN 4) Jakarta on Wednesday.

He stressed the importance of equipping Indonesia’s younger generation with technological expertise, including through education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). To support this goal, the government has introduced the Garuda Superior Schools program, he said.

The program is part of the government’s efforts to develop high-quality human resources by expanding access to quality education, Sugiono added.

He said the initiative aims to ensure that students with strong technological skills, academic ability, and significant potential have opportunities to pursue higher education, including at leading universities worldwide.

Sugiono expressed hope that the Garuda Superior Schools would provide Indonesia’s younger generation with a quality education and opportunities to study at renowned universities around the world, enabling them to contribute to the country’s progress.

He previously said that 51 Garuda Superior Schools had been established or were undergoing transformation during the first two years of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s administration.

Sugiono said the 51 schools comprised four newly established Garuda Superior Senior High Schools and 47 Garuda Superior Senior High Schools undergoing transformation.

“Four are done, 47 are in transformation, so there are 51,” he said.

Garuda Superior Schools are senior high schools that offer an additional pre-university curriculum and a boarding-school system, with an emphasis on STEM-based learning. The government aims to have 100 Garuda Superior Schools by 2029.
