Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Ministry for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (KP2MI) is accelerating efforts to reform the governance of the country’s migrant workforce by strengthening end-to-end protection and boosting their global competitiveness.
Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers Mukhtarudin stated that the ministry has partnered with the Indonesian Police to establish a dedicated desk for handling cases involving migrant workers.
“Strengthening protection at the pre-departure stage is a crucial focus, particularly to prevent illegal departures and mitigate the risk of human trafficking,” Mukhtarudin said in an official statement released here on Tuesday.
He affirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the public receives accurate information regarding overseas employment opportunities through legal recruitment channels and comprehensive preparatory training.
“Moving forward, no migrant worker should depart without the correct information, valid documents, and adequate competencies. Prevention must begin at the pre-departure stage so we can minimize issues in destination countries,” the minister emphasized.
Mukhtarudin also highlighted the importance of consolidating data on migrant workers to formulate more effective protection policies.
The government requires accurate data on the whereabouts, profiles, competencies, and specific needs of migrant workers to ensure protection services and interventions are delivered swiftly and on target.
“For us, the success of migrant worker protection is not merely about placing them abroad. It is about ensuring they work safely, receive their rights, prosper along with their families, and secure a better future upon returning to Indonesia,” he remarked.
To enhance the competitiveness of Indonesian workers in the global labor market, KP2MI is gradually shifting the demographic from predominantly low-skilled labor to a higher proportion of semi-skilled and highly skilled professionals.
A key initiative driving this transition is the Vocational High School Go Global (SMK Go Global) program, which focuses on upgrading vocational skills, improving foreign language proficiency, securing international certifications, and cultivating a strong professional work ethic.
