Indonesia extinguishes 454 hectares of land fires in key regions

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Emergency response teams in Indonesia have extinguished over 454 hectares of burned land across six priority provinces on Sumatra and Kalimantan islands, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said Tuesday.

Ground crews and joint task force personnel are continuing firefighting and cooling operations across an additional 570 hectares of affected land to reach the total target area of 1,024 hectares.

“BNPB, together with relevant ministries and institutions, the military, the police, and local governments, continues to intensify the deployment of personnel and resources to eradicate remaining hotspots in these areas,” said Berton Panjaitan, Acting Head of BNPB’s Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center.

The agency’s operations control center reported varying progress across the affected regions. Firefighters have made significant headway in South Sumatra, extinguishing 293 hectares of a targeted 401 hectares, and in South Kalimantan, where nearly 51 of 58 hectares have been contained.

Operations are also nearly complete in West Kalimantan with over 11 hectares put out, while crews in Riau have fully extinguished all 3.3 hectares of affected land.

However, substantial firefighting efforts remain underway in Central Kalimantan, where 389 hectares of its 452-hectare target are still burning, as well as in Jambi, where crews continue to battle fires across 64 remaining hectares.

Field operations are expected to gain momentum as weather patterns shift across the region. Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasts indicate the imminent onset of the rainy season will help naturally suppress remaining hotspots.

“Rainfall is expected to begin gradually from October to November in Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, Central Kalimantan, and West Kalimantan, followed by South Kalimantan from November to December,” Panjaitan noted.
