Indonesia hands Ethiopian Interpol fugitive to Addis Ababa

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s National Central Bureau (NCB) Interpol handed over Ethiopian national Selman Mohammed Yimer, an Interpol Red Notice fugitive, to NCB Addis Ababa, Indonesian police said.

Brigadier General Untung Widyatmoko, head of the Indonesian police’s International Relations Division, said Selman was a high-profile fugitive sought by NCB Addis Ababa under Interpol’s Infra Africa 2.0 Harare operation.

“IRN (Interpol Red Notice) subject committed large-scale fraud in Ethiopia, victimizing many people,” Untung said in a statement received in Jakarta on Friday.

Selman’s modus operandi was to pose as a representative of a trading company and offer investment opportunities. His crimes caused losses of about 46.45 million Ethiopian birr (ETB), or about US$285,000.

Untung said Selman was arrested while passing through I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali on Sunday, September 6. Several days later, the International Relations Division repatriated him.

On Wednesday, September 16, at 12:50 p.m. local time, the Indonesian police team and Selman arrived at Addis Ababa International Airport in Ethiopia.

They then traveled to the Ethiopian Federal Police headquarters under escort from NCB Addis Ababa.

At the Ethiopian Federal Police headquarters, the Indonesian police’s International Relations Division formally handed Selman over to Ethiopian police.

“The IRN subject is a large-scale fraud suspect. Victims were very grateful when informed that he had been arrested and would be handed over by NCB Jakarta,” Untung said.

Untung said the handover demonstrated the Indonesian police’s global cooperation in combating transnational crime.

“It reflects both countries’ commitment to continued cooperation in combating perpetrators of transnational and international crimes,” he said.
