Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Ministry of Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection (P2MI) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) are preparing to renew their partnership to safeguard Indonesian migrant workers abroad.
“Cooperation between the IOM and the Indonesian government has run smoothly,” Deputy Minister of P2MI Christina Aryani said following a meeting with IOM Chief of Mission for Indonesia Jeffrey Labovitz at the ministry’s office in Jakarta on Monday.
She explained that the renewal is necessary to align the partnership with the recent institutional transition of the former Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Agency (BP2MI) into a cabinet-level ministry.
The existing agreement between the IOM and the agency has been in effect since November 2021 and is set to expire in November 2026.
“The MoU renewal is expected to be more than just an administrative adjustment due to institutional changes. It should provide momentum to broaden the scope of our cooperation to meet the current protection needs of Indonesian migrant workers,” Aryani said.
One key initiative under the current partnership is the “Golden Migrant Village” program, which focuses on empowering former migrant workers and their families.
Both parties plan to sustain and expand this collaboration in the future.
“Empowerment is a vital component of the migrant worker protection ecosystem,” the deputy minister said.
“Protection is not only provided while migrant workers are abroad. It must also be reinforced upon their return to Indonesia. This ensures their experiences and resources can serve as capital to build independent lives.”
