Jakarta (ANTARA) –
The government estimates that resolving around 14,000 cases through restorative justice mechanisms facilitated by legal aid posts could save the state up to Rp1.2 trillion (nearly US$67 million), Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas said.
Speaking after a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, he noted that the government had established 83,960 village-level legal aid posts across Indonesia.
He added that the facilities had handled approximately 16,000 cases, of which around 14,000 were settled through mediation. For the remaining 2,000 cases, residents will receive free assistance with legal proceedings.
Agtas noted that the cases covered a wide range of issues, including land disputes, domestic violence, and other matters considered suitable for resolution through mediation.
The minister further said that the restorative justice approach goes beyond dispute resolution, as it is also designed to help citizens restore social relations without proceeding through the formal legal system.
He added that the restorative justice approach is consistent with provisions outlined in the new Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP).
Highlighting the role of the legal aid posts, Agtas said they operate with support from village-level stakeholders, including the military’s non-commissioned officers for village development (Babinsa), community policing officers (Bhabinkamtibmas), paralegals, and leaders of village administrations.
These individuals serve as mediators and peace brokers at the posts, he added.
