Indonesia moves to establish joint oversight team for rehab facilities

Bogor, West Java (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s National Narcotics Agency (BNN) has proposed establishing a joint team involving four institutions to strengthen oversight of substance abuse treatment centers nationwide to ensure compliance with standards.

BNN Head Police Commissioner General Suyudi Ario Seto floated the proposal in Bogor District, West Java, on Tuesday, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Social Affairs Ministry, the Health Ministry, and the Manpower Ministry.

Seto highlighted persistent shortcomings in drug rehabilitation, citing substandard services, unqualified personnel, and the operation of unlicensed facilities.

In response, Seto emphasized the importance of compiling comprehensive registries of all rehabilitation centers, conducting quality assessments, and certifying service providers.

The BNN chief stressed that uniform service standards must apply to all treatment centers, whether managed by the government or community organizations.

To achieve this, he proposed a cross-institutional team tasked with conducting regular oversight, auditing facility reports, and creating accessible complaint mechanisms for patients and their families.

Seto added that the team would recommend sanctions for violations, including cases involving the potential exploitation of rehabilitation survivors.

He emphasized that stronger oversight is essential to building an effective and supportive rehabilitation system.

Seto also underscored the importance of sustained care, stating that rehabilitation must extend beyond treatment facilities through skill-building and empowerment programs to help survivors reintegrate into society.

Under the agreement, BNN will collaborate with the three ministries to support comprehensive medical and social rehabilitation, data sharing, workforce development, and employment services for rehabilitated individuals.
