Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) – Indonesia must determine its own pace for developing artificial intelligence (AI) based on its capacity, Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid stressed.
“Indonesia must firmly believe that our pace should not be set by other countries or tech companies. We must determine it independently,” she said at the Bali Tech Week 2026 in Sanur, Denpasar, Bali, on Monday.
Meutya highlighted the global debate over the speed of AI development and the risks that follow.
She noted that US President Donald Trump is pushing for greater AI innovation, whereas several tech companies argue that AI development is moving too fast and needs to slow down due to potential risks.
Given these dynamics, Meutya emphasized that Indonesia needs to set a suitable pace so that the government, tech companies, and other stakeholders can move in sync.
She added that input from experts, industry players, and other stakeholders is vital to setting a pace that aligns with the readiness of Indonesia’s human resources and available capacity.
“Because, while innovation must continue to grow, the protection of fundamental human needs must also be safeguarded,” she remarked.
According to Meutya, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs is using Bali Tech Week 2026 to gather insights from various stakeholders on tech and AI development.
The conference runs from October 19 to 23 in Sanur, Bali, and is projected to draw over 4,000 participants from 32 countries.
On that occasion, the minister also reaffirmed that the Indonesian government is currently preparing a regulation and a roadmap for AI development, in addition to carrying out digital talent training programs to support AI development and utilization.
