Jakarta (ANTARA) – Foreign Affairs Minister Arrmanatha Nasir reaffirmed Indonesia’s full support for Singapore ahead of its rotating ASEAN chairmanship in 2027.

“Indonesia fully supports Singapore’s ASEAN chairmanship in 2027, and we look forward to keeping ASEAN united, central, and resilient,” Nasir said in a joint press statement with his Singaporean counterpart, Vivian Balakrishnan, following a meeting in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He noted that ASEAN must evolve into a more effective, efficient, and relevant body for the people of Southeast Asia, expressing confidence that Singapore can help drive that vision forward.

Nasir said President Prabowo Subianto remains committed to building strong national resilience during his administration.

However, he stressed that this focus does not mean Indonesia will ignore its contributions to the international community, adding that a resilient Indonesia will ultimately benefit its neighbors and the wider ASEAN region.

Nasir emphasized that the strong relationship between Indonesia and Singapore remains key to regional stability, noting that their robust ties ensure any potential disputes will not weaken the bilateral partnership.

Singaporean Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan welcomed the commitment conveyed by Nasir.

He noted that ASEAN was a primary focus during the bilateral meeting, with discussions centered on the organization’s future outlook and pressing regional issues.

“We look forward to working closely with Indonesia to strengthen ASEAN’s unity, centrality, and resilience during our chairmanship,” Balakrishnan said.

Balakrishnan emphasized that as Southeast Asia’s largest nation, Indonesia plays a pivotal role in driving ASEAN’s unity and progress moving forward.

He expressed confidence that Indonesia will continue to support Singapore during its ASEAN chairmanship, given its role as a close neighbor and longstanding partner.

“Indonesia is a key pillar for the neighborhood, for ASEAN, and indeed, for the world,” Balakrishnan said.
