Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia is preparing housing assistance for residents whose homes were damaged by an earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara, with repair grants ranging from Rp15 million to Rp30 million per unit, an official said Wednesday.
Acting Head of the Data, Information and Disaster Communication Center of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Berton SP Panjaitan said the amount would depend on the extent of damage to each home.
“Lightly damaged homes will receive Rp15 million, while moderately damaged homes will receive Rp30 million,” Berton said in a statement compiled by the Indonesian Government Communication Agency (Bakom) in Jakarta.
Homes classified as severely damaged will be handled differently through new construction or replacement housing, he said.
The government is still preparing the mechanism for distributing and accounting for the assistance, while BNPB and other relevant ministries and agencies continue assessing damaged homes.
The assessments are being conducted using common standards to prevent discrepancies between government institutions, Berton said.
“Damage assessments are already underway, and before they began, technical guidance was provided to assessors who will evaluate homes classified as severely, moderately and lightly damaged,” he said.
The guidance was intended to ensure assessors use the same methods and procedures when recording the impact of the disaster.
“We hope this technical guidance will establish a uniform understanding of the methods and procedures for assessing the impact of the disaster,” Berton said.
The standardized assessment is expected to produce consistent and accurate data identifying affected residents by name and address, allowing local governments and relevant ministries and agencies to work from the same figures.
“This will allow local governments and relevant ministries and agencies to obtain the same figures based on the names and addresses of the people affected,” Berton said.
