Jakarta (ANTARA) – National Development Planning Ministry (Bappenas) Secretary Teni Widuriyanti said improving maternal and child health remains one of Indonesia’s national priorities.
“Improving maternal and child health is a national priority under the 2025-2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN),” she said at the launch of the 2026-2030 National Framework for Reducing Maternal and Child Mortality, according to an official statement received here on Thursday.
She explained that investing in maternal and child health contributes to improving the quality of human resources, as reflected in the Human Capital Index, which measures the potential contribution of human resources to economic growth.
She mentioned Indonesia’s maternal mortality ratio declined from 189 deaths per 100,000 live births, based on the 2020 Population Survey, to 144, according to the 2025 Intercensal Population Survey.
By 2029, Indonesia aims to reduce the maternal mortality ratio to 77 deaths per 100,000 live births and the infant mortality rate to 9.96 deaths per 1,000 live births.
To support those targets, the national framework was developed to realize the priorities of the 2025-2045 National Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPN), the 2025-2029 RPJMN, and the 2030 SDGs into more operational strategies and interventions.
The document outlines targets, policy directions, strategies, indicators, and an action framework needed to accelerate the nationwide reduction of maternal and child mortality.
As part of the implementation, the government will launch a pilot of the “Project for Improving Maternal and Newborn Health in Papua of Indonesia,” a collaboration involving the Indonesian government, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), and UNICEF.
Regional heads in Papua have signed a joint commitment to support the implementation of the 2026-2030 National Framework for Reducing Maternal and Child Mortality through the project.
Beyond generating scalable best practices and policy recommendations, the pilot framework aims to strengthen health governance and elevate maternal and child healthcare nationwide.
