Indonesia pushes deep learning to transform education

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is promoting a Deep Learning approach to transform education, focusing on classroom instruction as a key starting point for improving learning outcomes.

In a written statement on Tuesday, Minister Abdul Mu’ti said education depends not only on what students learn, but also on how they experience the learning process.

“We want to address the problems in our education sector at their root—starting with the learning approach we are developing, which we call Deep Learning,” he said.

Mu’ti said Deep Learning is based on three principles: mindful, meaningful and joyful learning, with students’ experiences placed at the center of instruction.

He said the approach views learning quality as the main driver of educational success, supported by a mindset that values every student.

“Deep Learning is an approach centered on the core principle of respect. The keyword is respecting—respecting students, respecting teachers, and respecting knowledge,” he said.

Under the approach, every student must be treated with respect regardless of academic ability or personal background, he said.

Tatang Muttaqin, director general of secondary and special education, said strengthening Deep Learning is vital to transforming education and making vocational education more adaptive.

He said the Deep Learning Implementation Awards recognize teachers who address challenges, develop new teaching strategies and share best practices that can be replicated.

The initiative evaluates the entire learning process, from identifying problems and choosing teaching methods to measuring their concrete impact on students, he said.

Held from July 22 to Aug. 9, 2026, the Deep Learning Implementation Awards involved 250 schools trained in 2025 and recognized the top 10 projects across multiple categories.
