Indonesia pushes South-South ties to expand creative markets

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia called for stronger South-South and trilateral cooperation to expand global market access for creative economy businesses and empower creators, Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir said on Thursday.

“Through South-South cooperation and triumphant cooperation, we will share knowledge, build skills, and help creative enterprises grow beyond borders. Because going viral is not the same as going global,” Arrmanatha said at the 5th World Conference on Creative Economy (WCCE) in Jakarta.

Economic instruments were increasingly being politicised and used as weapons amid deepening global uncertainty and slowing trade, he said.

For developing countries, he said, such uncertainty is not abstract, as it was reflected in currency, commodity prices and their impact on jobs. Despite these challenges, Arrmanatha said the creative economy could become a new source of economic growth for Indonesia.

Arrmanatha also called for stronger protection for creators through fair, enforceable intellectual property rules suited to the age of artificial intelligence (AI).

He urged governments to connect creators with global markets through trade and economic agreements that deliver broader benefits to the creative economy.

Indonesia will seek to advance these priorities through the Jakarta Vision on Creative Economy, which is expected to be adopted at WCCE 2026, Arrmanatha said.

“Today, a nation’s wealth is not only what it digs from the ground, but it is also what it creates from the mind. Let us protect it, invest in it, and share it to the world,” he said.

Global creative exports exceed US$2 trillion, Arrmanatha said. Meanwhile, Indonesia’s creative economy contributes more than 7 percent of gross domestic product, employs more than 27 million people and generated nearly US$32 billion in exports last year.

WCCE 2026 is being held under the theme “Inclusively Creative, Collective Continuity” and focuses on four key pillars: technology, artificial intelligence and digital transformation; sustainability and the circular economy; intellectual property and creative rights; and inclusion, creative ecosystems and community empowerment.
