Indonesia says UN must pursue reform amid 21st-century dynamics

Jakarta (ANTARA) -Indonesia considers reform of the United Nations an increasingly urgent agenda amid evolving global dynamics in the 21st century, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono.

Speaking at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Saturday, Sept. 26, he noted that the UN “remains indispensable” in sustaining and supporting the multilateral system.

“Indonesia continues to believe in the United Nations, but believing in the United Nations also means believing that it must evolve with the world it serves,” Sugiono said.

Sugiono emphasized that Indonesia continues to view the UN as a multilateral institution capable of bringing nations together despite their differences to ease tensions and prevent conflicts or the use of force.

The organization provides common rules when interests compete and allows nations to combine capacities when no single country can act alone, he added.

Acknowledging current shortcomings, Sugiono stressed the need to build a multilateral framework that is more representative, agile, and effective for the modern era.

“Institutional transformation will not happen overnight, but the urgency of today’s challenges requires us to act now. We must start by strengthening our collective capacity to withstand crises, responding effectively to global crises and humanitarian situations, and sustaining peace, development, and cooperation,” he remarked.

He reiterated Indonesia’s call to reform the international financial architecture, emphasizing that developing nations require greater support and policy space to pursue development priorities and build resilience.

His remarks also underscored how Indonesia seeks to draw on its success in building national resilience to continue contributing to the international community.

He explained that Indonesia’s resilience is rooted in sustained efforts to improve living standards, preserve unity in diversity, and uphold human rights.

Sugiono led the Indonesian delegation to the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, as well as a series of other high-level meetings and bilateral engagements in New York.
