Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia has signed the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime, joining 90 other parties in endorsing the United Nations’ first global framework designed to combat cross-border digital offenses.
Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono signed the landmark agreement at UN Headquarters in New York on Thursday (September 24) during the high-level week of the UN General Assembly.
“For Indonesia, this Convention is crucial for strengthening efforts to prevent and criminalize cyber offenses at the national level,” Sugiono said in a statement on Friday.
He noted that the treaty provides an important legal framework for Indonesian law enforcement to strengthen international cooperation against transnational crimes, including online fraud, online gambling and child sexual abuse or exploitation material.
The convention, formally adopted on December 24, 2024, following negotiations that began in 2019, serves as a legal foundation for international cooperation combating cybercrime and sharing electronic evidence.
Indonesia played a pivotal role throughout the drafting process, serving as both negotiator and rapporteur through its diplomatic mission in Vienna.
While 91 signatories have signed the treaty, three nations have completed full ratification. The convention will officially enter into force 90 days after 40 member states deposit their instruments of ratification, acceptance, approval, or accession.
Sugiono, who is leading the Indonesian delegation in New York, said that Jakarta is now preparing to initiate the domestic ratification process and align the treaty’s provisions with national legislation.
Additionally, the Foreign Minister is scheduled to deliver Indonesia’s national statement before the UN General Debate on Saturday evening (September 26).
