Indonesia, Singapore FMs meet amid gas export adjustments

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesian Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir hosted Singaporean Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan for high-level bilateral talks in Jakarta on Tuesday afternoon, against the backdrop of recent regional discussions regarding bilateral energy supplies.

Minister Arrmanatha welcomed his Singaporean counterpart with a warm handshake before inviting him to sign the official guestbook and pose for photographs with the media at the Pancasila Building of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The two ministers then proceeded to a closed-door, one-on-one dialogue to address key bilateral matters and issues of mutual concern, followed by a joint press statement.

The diplomatic engagement unfolds as the two neighboring countries navigate evolving dynamics in their bilateral relationship, most notably concerning recent adjustments to natural gas exports.

Last week, Head of the Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas (SKK Migas) Djoko Siswanto announced that Indonesia had initiated a reduction in gas exports to Singapore starting last Saturday (October 24), cutting 15 billion British thermal units per day (BBTUD) from the Natuna fields and 16 BBTUD from Sumatra.

Addressing the adjustment, Coordinating Minister for Downstream and Energy Transition Bahlil Lahadalia stressed during a Monday (October 26) press conference that the supply modification remains strictly within the minimum contractual thresholds—representing an 8 percent reduction against a permissible 10 percent limit—and does not constitute a breach of agreement.

Echoing these sentiments, National Economic Council (DEN) Chairman Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan dismissed fears of diplomatic friction, stressing that Indonesia is prioritizing its national interests while maintaining strong bilateral ties.

“Why would we even fight with Singapore? There is no reason to,” Luhut said on Tuesday.
