Jakarta (ANTARA) -Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra outlined Indonesia’s priorities for expanding cooperation with South Korea during bilateral talks on intellectual property (IP).

During a meeting hosted by South Korea’s Minister of Intellectual Property Kim Yong Sun in Seoul on Wednesday (Sept. 30), he stressed the need to steer bilateral relations toward more tangible collaboration, including efforts to tackle IP infringements and strengthen legal certainty for businesses.

According to a statement received here on Thursday, Yusril said legal certainty is essential for maximizing IP’s role in fostering innovation, improving the business climate, attracting investment, and driving economic growth.

In this regard, he noted that Indonesia is seeking closer cooperation with South Korea in five key areas, including strategic dialogue and IP governance, exchanges of experience in developing IP master plans, and capacity building for law enforcement authorities.

He also highlighted Indonesia’s interest in partnering on initiatives that promote IP-based downstream processing, commercialization, valuation, and financing mechanisms, as well as cooperation on digital transformation and responses to challenges arising from the development and use of artificial intelligence.

The meeting followed the signing of a bilateral memorandum of understanding (MoU) on IP protection cooperation and plans for a partnership between their ministries through 2028.

Yusril and Kim also discussed ways to implement the MoU, including exchanges of information on alleged trademark and copyright infringements, as well as the handling of bad-faith trademark applications.

The two ministers further explored data-sharing mechanisms covering patents, trademarks, and industrial designs, alongside potential cooperation in training and education programs. Their discussions also covered support for South Korean businesses seeking to register and protect IP rights in Indonesia.

Furthermore, Yusril highlighted the 2027–2036 National Intellectual Property Master Plan as a key framework for strengthening Indonesia’s IP ecosystem in a comprehensive manner.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing optimal services for investors and IP rights holders registered in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Kim expressed appreciation for Yusril’s visit to Seoul, describing the meeting as a reflection of Indonesia’s commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation in IP governance.

He added that the MoU could serve as a platform for both countries to cooperate on efforts to prevent and combat IP infringements.
