Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Ministry of Tourism is strengthening efforts to ensure tourist safety when visiting volcanic areas across Indonesia.
“Regarding simultaneous activity at several volcanoes, safety decisions are not based solely on the number of active volcanoes, but on monitoring data and the latest recommendations from the relevant authorities,” Ministry of Tourism spokesperson Nia Niscaya told Antara in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Nia said the government is continuing to strengthen tourism safety through preventive measures, capacity building for tourism personnel, safety guidelines, risk mapping, and coordination among ministries and agencies.
The Ministry has also conducted tourism safety training in various regions, including mountain tourism training in Gowa Regency in March 2026, to strengthen the ability of destination managers and guides to mitigate risks and respond to emergencies.
According to Nia, the Ministry has collaborated with ministries, agencies, and regional governments, each within their respective areas of authority, to ensure the implementation of safety standards.
“Volcanic activity is dynamic, so restrictions on activities must follow the status of each volcano,” Nia said.
She said further measures included controlling visitor capacity and tourism activities based on volcanic alert levels and field conditions, as well as ensuring the availability of mitigation infrastructure such as evacuation routes, assembly points, warning signs, and disaster information.
Other measures include implementing standard operating procedures for safety and emergency response by destination managers, as well as strengthening the competency of mountain guides in accordance with the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework and applicable standards.
She also highlighted Indonesia’s significant potential to develop volcano tourism as part of its nature and adventure tourism offerings.
With 127 active volcanoes located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia has unique geological assets that can be developed into nature, adventure, sports, educational, and geotourism experiences, as well as tourism centered on the culture of surrounding communities.
