Indonesia taking steps to eradicate poverty, stunting: VP Amin

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Vice President Ma’ruf Amin reiterated the government’s resolve to eradicate extreme poverty and stunted growth to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Indonesia.

“To eradicate poverty in any forms, as elucidated by the first SDGs, the government will prioritize social protection and empowerment policies,” the vice president stated while opening through online means the 2022 Indonesian SDGs Corporate Summit (ISCOS) organized by the Corporate Forum for CSR Development (CFCD) in Bali, Tuesday.

The government is exerting efforts to lower the extreme poverty rate, currently recorded at four percent, to achieve a zero-percent rate by 2024, he noted.

“Integration, synergy, and collaboration for cross-ministerial and institutions’ programmes and activities as well as the involvement of non-government actors are key to achieving zero-percent extreme poverty. Yet, we also need to be mindful of the accuracy of the programme’s beneficiary recipients’ data,” Amin remarked.

The vice president affirmed that the government is also working hard to achieve the second SDG — zero hunger and malnutrition — to realize 14-percent stunting prevalence by 2024.

“Despite the success to press the stunting rate, from 30.8 percent in 2018 to 24.4 percent in 2021, great challenges remain in our efforts to achieve the 10.4-percent rate in the next two-and-a-half years,” he expounded.

Amin said that as the holder of the G20 Presidency this year, Indonesia will utilize the medium to encourage global cooperation to recover together and recover stronger and sustainably.

The vice president also encouraged stakeholders, from the government, the business community, professionals, academics and researchers, and residents, to collaborate to achieve the SDGs target in Indonesia.

“The COVID-19 pandemic ought to become our common momentum to enhance solidarity while facing a crisis,” the vice president stated.

Meanwhile, CFCD Chairperson Thendri Supriatno stated that private enterprises must play their role to achieve SDGs in Indonesia.

“We hope that with our collective actions, the ambitious Sustainable Development Goals, such as zero poverty by 2030, can be achieved,” Supriatno remarked.
