Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia and Thailand have agreed to strengthen strategic cooperation to bolster the stability, security, and resilience of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) amid mounting global uncertainties.
The commitment was announced by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul following a high-level bilateral meeting at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday (August 3).
Speaking at a joint press conference after the meeting, President Prabowo emphasized that, as founding members of ASEAN, both nations share a responsibility to maintain peace and prosperity in Southeast Asia.
“Indonesia and Thailand must continue to play leadership roles in strengthening ASEAN’s resilience and relevance,” President Prabowo said, highlighting the need to uphold ASEAN centrality as the anchor of regional stability.
Addressing the ongoing political crisis in Myanmar, the two leaders reaffirmed their full support for the implementation of ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus, calling for an immediate end to violence, the promotion of inclusive dialogue, and the expansion of humanitarian assistance.
“Indonesia and Thailand will continue to work together to encourage ASEAN to play a constructive role in supporting the creation of sustainable peace in Myanmar,” the president said.
Beyond regional affairs, President Prabowo and Prime Minister Anutin also exchanged views on international developments, particularly the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
Both leaders called for an immediate end to hostilities, urging a resolution through diplomatic negotiations and in accordance with international law. The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to a strong strategic partnership aimed at delivering tangible economic and security benefits to the people of both countries.
