Indonesia urges OIC to act on Israeli violations against Palestinians

Jakarta (ANTARA) -Indonesia urged the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to take real and tangible actions in overcoming threats from Israel regime and to defend the rights of the Palestinian people.

“OIC should uphold the organisation’s dignity, not through mere statements and condemnations, but through real and sustainable actions,” Deputy Foreign Minister Anis Matta said, according to a Foreign Ministry remark on Sunday.

The DFM’s remarks were conveyed during the OIC’s 23rd Extraordinary Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Thursday (August 27), which Matta attended to represent Foreign Minister Sugiono.

During the extraordinary session, he said that Indonesia regrets continued violence and international law violations by Israel, including by expanding illegal zionist settlements, annexing Palestinian lands, and murdering Palestinian civilians.

Indonesia sees the situation in the Middle East as increasingly critical, especially when the effects of ongoing regional conflicts have spread beyond the region.

Matta believed Israel had exploited the distraction that forced the OIC to focus its attention elsewhere, allowing it to continue its crimes against Palestinians. Amid the situation, he added, the OIC’s ability to work together was being put to the test.

“OIC should maximise its capability and mechanism to demand Israel’s accountability for its crimes and regard acts of violence by illegal settlers as an act of terrorism,” the DFM emphasised.

Besides discussing the Palestinian issue, OIC’s extraordinary session also approved Mauritanian diplomat Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed to serve as the secretary general for the 2026-2031 period, succeeding Chadian diplomat Hissein Brahim Taha.

At the sidelines of the OIC meeting, Matta conducted bilateral meetings with foreign ministers of Sudan, Palestine, and Qatar, as well as DFMs of Turkey and Somalia, to discuss bilateral cooperation and regional and global issues of joint interest.

According to the Foreign Ministry, Indonesia’s participation at the OIC extraordinary summit fulfills the constitutional mandate to contribute to world peace, especially to end conflicts in Middle East which affected many other parts of the world.
