Jakarta (ANTARA) – Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid voiced Indonesia’s support for incorporating a “safety by design” approach into artificial intelligence (AI) development, stressing the importance of prioritizing risk mitigation over rapid technological rollout.
Speaking at a press conference at her office in Jakarta on Wednesday (October 7), Meutya emphasized that developing sophisticated AI models requires adequate time to ensure that security and ethical measures are built in from the ground up.
“Indonesia certainly agrees – not necessarily with slowing down AI itself, but with the need to implement ‘safety by design’ for AI more cautiously, a process that inevitably takes time,” she stated.
She clarified that Indonesia is not calling for an absolute halt or slowdown of technological innovation, but rather urging global developers to conduct the process with greater prudence and responsibility.
“We emphasize the need for an appropriate amount of time when dealing with such sophisticated new technology. It should not be pursued without sufficient mitigation processes,” Meutya added, noting that deploying advanced AI without adequate safeguards risks exacerbating digital threats and societal harms.
The minister’s remarks come amidst an ongoing debate within the global tech sector regarding the risks associated with rapid AI advancement.
Industry leaders and ethicists have increasingly warned of severe threats, including the automated creation of cyber weapons, mass disinformation campaigns and guidance on assembling hazardous materials.
Experts have also raised concerns over the alignment problem, where highly autonomous AI systems operating without strict human value alignment could act unpredictably or beyond developer control.
