Indonesia urges trust in police over illegal wiretapping probe

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra has urged the public to trust the National Police (Polri) in investigating an alleged illegal wiretapping case involving its own personnel.

“There should be no doubt about the National Police investigating its own members,” Yusril said at a press conference at his office in Jakarta on Tuesday evening.

He said President Prabowo Subianto was fully committed to ensuring the professional enforcement of the law.

Yusril added that the investigation would be conducted in accordance with Indonesia’s National Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP).

Earlier on Tuesday, the National Police’s Criminal Investigation Department named three police officers, identified by their initials LSP, ASN and EH, as suspects in alleged illegal wiretapping, deletion of electronic data and unauthorized access to electronic systems.

National Police Criminal Investigation Department Chief Commissioner General Asep Safrudin said the three were named suspects after investigators questioned several witnesses and seized a number of pieces of evidence.

Following their designation as suspects, all three were detained at the National Police Headquarters detention facility in Jakarta.

The alleged illegal wiretapping, deletion of electronic data and illegal access reportedly targeted a range of individuals and organizations, including the president, government officials, political figures, media representatives, civil society groups and businesspeople.

“The suspects allegedly conducted wiretapping without following proper procedures, targeting the telephone numbers of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, state officials, political figures, media representatives, leaders of mass organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and businesspeople,” Safrudin said.

Between 2023 and 2024, the suspects allegedly ordered wiretapping operations without a formal request from investigators or an accompanying police report. Safrudin said the surveillance activities were also unrelated to any law enforcement proceedings.
