Jakarta (ANTARA) –
Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and United States’ Under Secretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby deliberated ways to strengthen Indonesia-US defense cooperation during their meeting on Tuesday.
The encounter, which took place at the Defense Ministry headquarters in Jakarta, was revealed by Sjamsoeddin’s official Instagram, @sjafriesjamsoeddin.
“The meeting becomes a strategic dialogue platform to exchange views on regional and global security dynamics and discuss concrete steps in strengthening Indonesia-US defense cooperation,” the Indonesian defense minister stated.
However, he did not provide any details about issues discussed with Under Secretary Colby during the talks.
Sjamsoeddin expressed hope that the bilateral partnership between Indonesia and the United States will be stronger, especially as the two countries have been engaged in various forms of cooperation, including the Super Garuda Shield and the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) joint exercises.
“Our partnership should be developed constructively and equally, and by respecting each other, oriented to national interests and tangible contribution for regional peace, stability, and security,” he remarked.
Besides Sjamsoeddin and Colby, representatives from the two countries’ defense ministries and militaries also joined the talks, with gifts exchanged between them after concluding the dialogue.
According to a statement from the US Embassy in Jakarta, Under Secretary Colby, along with Assistant Secretary of War for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs John No., commenced their series of visits to the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, and Cambodia.
During their visit, which commenced on August 8, they will meet their counterparts and other senior officials “to advance the Department’s strong bilateral partnership in the region.
“This trip reaffirms the Department’s commitment to build a durable peace in the region through strength,” the statement said.
